Plagiarism and duplicate publication policy

Plagiarism and self-plagiarism

A separate case of improper behavior of the author is plagiarism - the publication (in whole or in part) of other people's works or ideas as one's own and/or the reproduction of published texts (published works of art) of other authors without indicating authorship (Article 42). Law of Ukraine « On Education »).

Plagiarism is defined as the publication (partial or full) of scientific results obtained by other persons as the results of one's own research, and/or reproduction of published texts by other authors without appropriate indication of authorship.

Control procedure:

  • All manuscripts submitted to the Editorial Board undergo mandatory verification for text borrowings using specialized services iThenticate and StrikePlagiarism (Unicheck[1]).
  • The Editorial Board initiates the corresponding reports (iThenticate report and Unicheck report), which are provided reviewers for the final assessment of the originality and scientific significance of the work.
  • Self-plagiarism - publishing one's own previously published results as new - is also unacceptable. In case of re-use of parts of the text of one's own works, the author is obliged to format them as quotes with a proper reference to the original source.

Duplicate Publication Policy

Duplicate (redundant publication) is the use by authors of significant parts of their previously published works without a clear reference to the original source. The editorial board does not accept identical articles that have already been published or submitted to other publications.

If the author wishes to submit to the journal an article that has been or will be published in whole or in part in another journal, he must specify the details in the cover letter before submission. The journal editorial board may consider such an article if the other work is published in the language of the European Union, and its main results and conclusions are important for the Ukrainian-speaking audience.

Exceptions and special cases:

  • Translations. The editorial board may consider a translation of an article that was published in the language of the EU countries, if its results are of exceptional importance for the Ukrainian audience (with a mandatory reference to the original).
  • Preprints. Publication of the author's version of the manuscript on preprint servers (for example, arXiv.org) is not considered duplication. Authors must notify about the presence of a preprint and provide its DOI when submitting the article. After publication, the author must update the preprint with a link to the final version in the Journal.
  • Conference Proceedings. The Journal accepts articles based on abstracts of reports or conference proceedings, provided that the submitted manuscript contains significantly expanded results, updated methodology, and in-depth analysis.
  • Dissertation Research. Materials that are part of dissertations published as manuscripts are accepted for consideration.
  •
  • Communication with the media and external resources
    Authors should provide preprint placement details, including DOI and licensing terms, when submitting the original manuscript or at any other time during the review process. After publication, the author should update the preprint information and add a bibliographic description of the article with the DOI and a URL to the published version of the article on the journal website.
    Authors may choose any type of license for preprints, including Creative Commons. The type of CC license chosen will affect the terms for sharing and reusing the preprint. Preprints should be listed in the reference list submitted to the journal.
    Authors who publish preprints should adhere to a specific policy for communicating with the media. When journalists contact scientists about the results of a preprint, the author should provide an explanation (in particular, that the results are interim, the conclusions may change because the article has not yet been peer-reviewed). More information that will help responsibly inform the public about the results of research published in preprints can be found in the documents developed by the ASAPbio – Preprints in the Public Eye project.
  •
  • Measures in case of detection of violations
    At the review stage. If the check reveals a significant percentage of borrowings, the manuscript is returned for revision. If intentional plagiarism is detected, the article is rejected without the right to resubmit.
    After publication. If the fact of plagiarism or duplication is detected in an already published article, the Editorial Board acts in accordance with the COPE protocols:
    an official announcement of the retraction of the article is published on the article page on the Journal website and in the next printed issue;
    the article file is marked with a watermark “Retracted”;
    the institution with which the author is affiliated is notified of the incident.
